Charlie Crist tackles the tough issues

Posted by: arabellasays In: Around Florida| Politics as Usual

After coming out against texting while driving on Tuesday, Governor Charlie Crist gave a vote of confidence for beleaguered Florida State University head coach Bobby Bowden on Wednesday. Gotta hand it to old Charlie – he sure knows how to take a stand on the most important issues facing Florida and the nation.

Gov. Crist, who aspires to the Senate and, ultimately, the Presidency of the United States, has a track record that is, essentially, a lack of track record. The man is terrified to take a stand on any issue that might alienate a single voter. So he simply refuses to take one. Or, alternatively, takes both sides.

Some quick examples: In February, the governor endorsed Obama’s stimulus plan; a couple weeks ago, Crist denied having supported the stimulus. Crist rejects out-of-hand the idea of a public option in the health care bill but touts Florida’s own government-run program KidCare. Crist the eco-aware governor opposed offshore drilling; Crist the John McCain sycophant and VP hopeful backed drilling.

According to a recent survey, 91% of adults favor a ban on texting while driving. So I guess Charlie feels pretty safe with that one. Crist didn’t get where he’s at without knowing which way the wind blows – and twisting with it. But he might be going out on a limb with the Bowden thing. There is a growing rumble among even the most ardent FSU supporters that it’s time for the “King of the Road” to hit the road. Maybe this is an indication of a bold new Charlie Crist. But I really doubt it. Bobby Bowden just happened to be standing next to him at the time.

Some may call us unfocused. We prefer "well-rounded" or "intellectually curious." Whatever. The fact is we have a broad range of interests and will probably cover a lot of ground here. Consider this a buffet (or a tapas restaurant, if you're determined to be one of the cool kids). A bit of this, a taste of that. We may eventually settle into a single groove, but, yeah, probably not. Just sayin...
